The design conceived the house as a series of “BUNGALOWS” of
various function
congregated around an entry court which seamlessly dissolved into
the exterior
engaging space of varying function and seasonal use. The flow of
space from inside
to outside which characterizes the house’s atmosphere was achieved
through
the consistent use of rough render to both the external and
internal walls and the
continuity of wide timber internal flooring boards flowing through
the full height cavity
sliding timber windows to matching external timber decking. This
house was to be a
village rather than a castle and when opened up, to be part of the
site yet when
closed to be warm, cosy and secure.
The family enjoys a very relaxed informal lifestyle and enjoys
vacations in the tropics
and the African bush. They wanted a home reflecting the primitive
influences they felt
most comfortable in. The brief was to live in a home which was soft
and organic in
its “feel” while having the environment with minimal maintenance.
The material choice,
ability to slide the house into “open resort mode”, distribution of
congregation
spaces around fireplaces and visual separation of the pavilions has
contributed to
facilitating the desired lifestyle.
The client had assembled a double frontage Coogee seafront property
with a view
to building their dream home. The building is located amongst
houses of similar floor
area but in more consolidated envelops fronting the costal walkway.
The site falls
steeply to the East from Wolesey Road and the house is largely
sited on the lower
platform to the east of a pre-existing retaining wall. From the
road, it appears as a
single story matching the adjacent dwellings. From the public
domain to the east it is
stepped terracing up the site reflecting the topography and width
of the site.
