Burski Ksawery The Art of Cooking and Diplomacy
Former Ambassador of Poland to China 20002004
Sinologist and former ambassador, Mr Burski is a true enthusiast for all
things Chinese cuisine. An avid collector of menus taken from all of the best
banquets he attended during his career in China, he also wrote a book on his
culinary passion and still strives to enjoy fine dining and cuisine, like here
for a dinner at the Ambassadors residence.
"No matter where you are, good food is one of the main topics
of conversation at any dinner table. If you are a cook yourself, or a
gourmet who appreciates good food and local specialty dishes from
here and there, or can say that you know a cook, well then you are
automatically a friend. "
Mr Burski arrived in China in 1955, and was among the first foreign
students to enrol in the country, at Peking University and then at the Institute
of Foreign Affairs. This year he was invited as an outstanding alumnus to
attend the ceremony for the 60th anniversary of the Institute.
Ceremony host : "Mr Burski, could you share a personal anecdote
with us while you were studying chinese here? "
Ksawery Burski : "If I managed to learn any Chinese at all at
the time, all thanks must go to my teachers, to my dormitory friends,
and to all the other Chinese classmates who would help me with the
pronunciation, the four tones for example. "
He not only studied Chinese language but also gained invaluable
knowledge on literature, geography and international relations. This rich
curriculum allowed Mr Burski to attain a strong understanding of China and
its diplomacy. He worked as an interpreter for many years, and eventually
climbed the ranks to become Ambassador of Poland to China, from 2000 to
2004. Many visits and exchanges occurred at that time.
"We managed to improve Polish-Chinese political relations. Then
there was of course the visit by the Chinese president to Poland at the
end of my tenure here. "
Poland established diplomatic relations with China in October 7th
1949. Mr Burski knew the relations between the two countries inside out.
During his career, he acted as interpreter for many scientific and intellectual
personalities, from Tadeusz Kotarbinski, the President of the Polish Science
Academy, to Fei Xiaotong, the famous Chinese sociologist.
"China in 2001-2002 was interested in taking green technology for
environmental protection as well as technology for the chemical industry
that was being used in Poland. "
Ksawery Burski now lives in Poland, and keeps active by giving
conferences on the Chinese economy.
"I have always tried to advocate introducing basic knowledge of
the Chinese economy to Polish economic schools. Polish students would
benefit from at least some basic knowledge of the economy of China as
well as that of South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and so on. "
Mr Burski is determined to continue strengthening the China-Poland
relationship by passing on his passion and knowledge to the next generation
of Polish youth.
