The extraordinary nature of global crises and disruption in recent years have given sharp definition to the critical role of universities. Universities continue to harness shared strengths and offer solutions to challenges such as public health, climate change and equal access to education among many other pressing issues. More than ever before, universities are responsive to the needs of the global community and increasingly relied upon to meet social responsibilities through research, education, and international engagement.
Tsinghua University is a leading institution of higher education with global vision. Throughout its history, the University has greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern. In recent years, the University has become more innovative, more international and more humanity-oriented.Tsinghua has become more innovative through its cultivation of creative talents and promotion of cutting-edge research. Tsinghua has become more international through its pursuit of deeper international partnerships that help students gain global perspectives and better connect China to the world. Tsinghua has further enriched its credentials in humanities by working to create synergies between liberal arts and science programs, and nurture well-rounded graduates.
Tsinghua University invited global leaders in higher education to the Global Forum of University Presidents 2021 (GFUP 2021), to explore universities’ enduring potential and hopeful expectations as well as universities’ emerging capacity to benefit society. Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong noted that the historical context of GFUP 2021 can be considered from three perspectives. “The first is the profound and urgent nature of global challenges that are with us now and on the horizon. The second perspective is the approaching millennial marking point of university education. The third perspective is Tsinghua’s 110th anniversary. This is a good time to explore the past, present and future of the University’s development, and to celebrate our collaborative achievements with our cherished global partners”, Qiu said.
The Forum was held from April 19th to 24th, 2021. Themed Innovate for the Future: Vision and New Mission of Universities, participants explored universities’ transformative landscape and challenges, identified pathways towards more open, integrative and resilient universities. Thematic Sessions of the Forum culminated in the Forum’s Plenary Session on April 24th and featured the release of the Tsinghua Consensus 2021, which was designed to encapsulate the Forum’s outcomes and guide the vision and new mission of universities.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres sent a congratulatory letter to the GFUP 2021, saying that universities have a central role to play in addressing longstanding global challenges, by nurturing new generations of young leaders and global citizens, promoting digital cooperation and helping to ensure access to quality education. The Forum was held both online and offline in Beijing, and brought together leaders and representatives from more than 330 universities worldwide, 77 international organizations, academic institutions, university alliances and industry partners. Inaddition, over 300 representatives from leading Chinese universities andhigh schools attended the Forum on site.
