银木住宅
SilverWoodHouse is the first major project of Ernesto Pereira, who also worked
extensively on the carpentry and finishing of the house. The house is located
on the coast in the Mindelo area of Vila do Conde in the Norte Region of
Portugal, about 20 kilometres 12.5 miles north of Porto. Built for a cost of
¤100,000 in 2014, this remodeling project is the result of a careful study of
the needs and habits of the owners. Ernesto Pereira describes the original
structure as ‘a soulless house [with a] typical type of construction, interior
distribution and a “rural” exterior.’ His solution was to ‘bring the beach to
[his clients so that they] could feel the proximity of the dunes, sand and
untreated wood every day.’ Wood is the dominant material, with diagonally
placed strips marking exterior surfaces as well as terraces and floors. A good
part of the interior furnishings are in wood and were also designed by Ernesto
Pereira, whose family and friends are carpenters and masons. For the outside
surfaces, the alternation of wood and white plaster gives a sense of contrast
and movement to the house, the form of which is essentially rectangular. In his
written description of the project, Ernesto Pereira clearly takes a great deal
of pride and pleasure from the positive reactions of his clients to this
project. In this respect, and in terms of the experience of the architect, this
is a very personal, or rather personalised, design, based on the transformation
