(The important thoughts in Chinese traditional culture)
The thought of
Yin-yang is the basic philosophy in Chinese ancient time, according to which
everything is the unit of opposites. There are always two sides to things in
the world, they are opposite to each other while unified together at the same
time. The opposing side would be respectively transformed to the other side.
The five-element thought is one of plain
materialist ideas, holding that all the phenomena in the universe are composed
by the movement and mutation of the five objects, including metal, wood, water, fire and earth. It
emphasizes the connection among the five objects, as well as the mutual promotion
and restraint.
Generation
refers to promotion, development and enhancement, while restraint means
refraining, constraint. The pattern of generation is listed in the following:
metal promotes water, water enhances wood, wood promotes fire, fire promotes
earth and earth promotes metal. The pattern of restraint: metal restrains wood,
wood refrains earth, earth restrains water, water restrains fire and fire
restraints metal.
