Preface
I
Vicissitudes do mark human affairs always;
Time comes, time goes, thus there are old as well as modern days.
In Natures bosom remains the historical site;
My friends and I now, in our turn, climb to the heights.
Tang Dynasty: Meng Haoran
Modern Chinese literature already has a history of 100 years, so does
modern Chinese childrens literature. This has left us with a great number of
famous sites in the spiritual field and led us to ascend and appreciate the
boundless scenery of the literature world.
In this globalized, networked and informationalized era, it is not only
possible but also necessary for Chinese literature to become integrated
into world literature and spread out across the world. Since the start of the
21st century, China has attracted much attention by becoming the second
largest economy in the world. The craze for China, craze for the Orient
and craze for sinology are increasingly heated up, which demonstrate that
Chinese culture is gradually being granted its due status and value in the
world culture. At the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Beijing International Book
Fair, both held once a year, the translated introduction and copyright output
of Chinese literature play a significant role; the China Writers Association
II
organizes writer delegations annually to go around the world for exchanges
on literature; famous universities in China such as Peking University, Beijing
Normal University, Fudan University and Nanjing University hold a variety
of seminars on world literature and comparative literature each year and
dispatch professors and experts as visiting scholars; the Confucius Institutes
around the world have become friendly envoys disseminating Chinese
culture. The key focus is introducing Chinese culture and literature to the
world, and that includes Chinese childrens literature.
Chinese childrens literature is deeply rooted in the fertile cultural soil of
the 5,000-year Chinese nation inherited from oracle bone inscriptions. It
picks up the remote myth totem like In Pursuit of the Sun and Bird Jingwei
Trying to Fill the Sea, and carries forward the treasury of folk fairy tales and
songs with colorful agricultural civilization since the Qin 221 BC206 BC
and Han 206 BC220 AD dynasties. After entering modern times, with an
open mind, it has absorbed new elements and patterns of foreign childrens
literature represented by Europe and America, thus developing into the
modern Chinese childrens literature we see today. From the beginning of
the 20th century, Chinese childrens literature now presents a splendid sight
after strenuous efforts and intelligent creation by five generations of writers,
including Ye Shengtao, Bing Xin, Mao Dun, Zheng Zhenduo and Feng Zikai
first generation; Zhang Tianyi, Yan Wenjing, Chen Bochui, He Yi and
Jin Jin second generation; Ren Rongrong, Ren Dalin, Hong Xuntao, Ge
Cuilin, Sun Youjun and Jin Bo third generation; Ge Bing, Zhang Zhilu, Gao
Hongbo, Cao Wenxuan, Qin Wenjun, Shen Shixi and Huang Beijia fourth
generation; Yang Hongying, Tang Sulan and Xue Tao fifth generation.
Today, Chinas status as a large country producing childrens publications
is forged by outstanding performance with 600 million copies of childrens
books published each year, more than 80,000 categories in the retail market
and the annual sales of over 8 billion yuan. Here, childrens literature books
are dominant products. Excellent childrens literature works in China win
III
warm praise from young readers. These works include Cao Wenxuans novel
Grass House which has gone through 130 printings over a period of 10 years;
Yang Hongyings Naughty Boy Ma Xiaotiao has published 20 million in
total; Childrens Literature published in Beijing has a monthly circulation
of some 1.1 million copies, making it the largest print run of a pure literature
publication in China.
Childrens literature books also include E-books, and audio-video ones.
Various forms of reading activities organized all over the country have
promoted reading of the classics, early-stage reading, parent-child reading,
class reading, picture book reading, allowing childrens literature to move
into the spiritual world for millions upon millions of children China now has
367 million juveniles......
