From September 18 to 19, 2018, the China Society for Human Rights Studies and the China Foundation for Human Rights Development jointly held the 2018 Beijing Forum on Human Rights. With the theme of Poverty Elimination: Seeking Common Development to Build a Community of Shared Future for Human Beings, the forum discussed in depth topics including Poverty Elimination and the Realization of the Rights to Subsistence and Development, the Thought, Achievements, and Experience of China in Poverty Elimination and Its Significance to Human Rights, International Cooperation and Human Rights Protection in Poverty Alleviation and Building a Community of Shared Future for Human Beings and Human Rights Protection. These are important ideological achievements. Huang Kunming, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the forums opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. Shanpa Puncog, President of the China Society for Human Rights Studies, and Huang Mengfu, Chairman of the China Foundation for Human Rights Development, and others also delivered speeches. More than 200 officials, scholars and experts from nearly 50 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, France, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Nigeria, Cuba, Mexico and the United Nations, as well as some international organizations attended the forum.
Participants agreed that poverty eradication is a goal being pursued by all of humanity. Poverty not only hinders the realization of human rights and freedoms, but also restricts national development. Through poverty reduction, China has vigorously promoted the progress of human rights, especially the protection of the right to subsistence and the right to development. The protection of the right to subsistence and the right to development provide strong support for improving peoples living and production standards and consolidating the achievements of poverty reduction, forming a virtuous circle. In poverty reduction, China has implemented the basic strategy of targeted poverty alleviation, and made remarkable achievements in this regard. Although this targeted and people-oriented strategy isbased on Chinas national conditions, its significance is not limited but can be used for reference by other countries to help more people living in poverty. At the same time, China is willing to listen to and learn from the poverty reduction experiences of other countries and regions and understand their difficulties and challenges. The initiative to build a community with a shared future for all humanity reflects Chinas determination to strengthen international cooperation in areas such as human rights, promote mutual benefits and win-win results, and work with other countries to tackle and solve global poverty.
The participants also shared the experience of poverty reduction in China and other parts of the world, discussed the difficulties and challenges of poverty reduction, and put forward their own views on how to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results through international cooperation and build a community of a shared future for mankind that is free of all forms of poverty. They generally believed that the forum theme was of great significance, providing new opportunities and new vitality for global poverty reduction cooperation and promoting the development of human rights. The nine consecutive sessions of the Beijing Forum on human rights have become a unique platform for discussing contemporary development and human rights protection issues, as well as a think tank for international organizations such as the United Nations to adopt important decisions in the future.
In order to share the ideological achievements of the forum with readers around the world, some of the delivered papers are now collected and published. There are 73 speeches and papers in this collection, divided into five parts according to the sub topics of the forum. The opinions expressed in each paper solely represent the personal opinions of the author, and should not be deemed as reflecting the view of the sponsor.
