PrefaceSports refers to various kinds of activities that involve promotion of physical fitness or manual dexterity leading to enhancement of the comprehensive quality of the human body. Generally, sports are divided into activities for pure entertainment, competitive sports, those involving medicine and health care, mass free sports, etc. This book mainly introduces competitive sports, in which means that individuals or collectives compete in the designated sports events at specialist venues for maximizing their potentials in physique, stamina, psychology and stratagems to defeat their rivals. Popular sports events include track and field athletics, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, football (soccer and rugby), table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, swimming, cycle racing on the road or track, martial arts etc. With very high ornamental value, competitive sports continuously tap the potential of the human body and expanding the boundaries of physical endeavors, thus winning great popularity.China is a big sports country with a history of thousands of years. Particularly since the period of the Republic of China in the early 20th Century, Chinese sport has been advancing with the times, being constantly enriched. However, before the founding of the People‘s Republic of China, materials related to sport endeavors were seldom collected and studied, so that the nation had many shortcomings in the study of sports history. Only two monographs on the history of Chinese sport were published in the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949), including History of China Sports edited by Mr. Guo Shaoyu in 1919, and Chin Woo written by Mr. Chen Tiesheng in 1918. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Commercial Press, Shanghai Lizhi Sports Press, Shanghai Qinfen Publishing House and others published some works on sports rules with the help of certain senior physical culture workers, and these briefly introduced the history of some sports events. At that time, some magazines and newspapers introduced and encouraged the spread of some Western sports. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, importance was attached to the collection and sorting of sports-related materials, and this led to the publication of some sports textbooks using the experience of the former Soviet Union for reference. However, for various reasons, there were few publications consistently following sports activities, and the development of sports undertakings during the period of the Republic of China was seldom mentioned. After 1978, China set up its first sports museum, which collected a large number of historical materials on various sports. With the vigorous development of the folk collection cause, precious historical sports-related materials scattered through society were finally collected by some dedicated people. All these contribute to today‘s sports studies. Li Runbo is an outstanding collector of old newspapers and periodicals. The historical materials on sports he has collected cover a rich variety of activities over a long period. In the past ten years or so, he has written many books and articles.
