PREFACEThe Spirit of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team will endureThere are only ten days left in 2019. Today, I am making a 2020 training schedule in preparation of the Olympic Games.Making a schedule for the next year has become part of my routine work since I began coaching the Chinese women’s volleyball team eight years ago. However, my workload has been significantly reduced compared with the first two years.I was determined to devote myself to this team when I became their head coach for the second time at the age of 53.The sustainable development of a career needs the devotion of many people from generation to generation.More than 40 years ago when the Chinese women’s volleyball team started from scratch, my coach Yuan Weimin laid the foundation for their following development. Players of previous generations, including me, had been trying to turn impossibilities into realities under his guidance. From then on, all coaches and players of the team have spared no efforts to make contributions to their development. In 2013, I was still working in the volleyball circle when the team encountered new challenges on their way towards further progress. As a member of the older generation of the Chinese women’s volleyball team, I thought that I had a responsibility to do more for the team.As I regarded my decision to become the head coach of the team as a new attempt, I neither cared whether this decision will lead to success nor hesitated for fear of failure. The Chinese women’s volleyball team have been developing in the right direction since they had been among the world’s leading teams for many years. However, with the rapid advances in science and technology, people were gaining deeper insights. As a result, modern volleyball is undergoing profound changes, and the new challenges for our team are to keep a balance between tradition and innovation in the new era.The key competitive advantage of the Chinese women’s volleyball team lies in their high flexibility and agility based on their comprehensive competence. Nevertheless, in today’s volleyball competitions, reliance on six or seven key players can no longer ensure long-term success as before. All coaches and athletes have to break out of their comfort zones to make new attempts.During our exploration, we can draw on the experiences accumulated by our predecessors. However, we also need to be bold enough to forge ahead regardless of the difficulties and challenges.Throughout the seven or eight years, very few could adhere to our cause from the very beginning to the end. Many people joined us but quit halfway. I may have forgotten some details without the reminder by this book that records our growth. However, I can still vividly remember the facial expressions of these players when they joined the team, and the regret and reluctance of those who had to part from us out of different reasons.Along the way, we have been constantly improving ourselves by admitting our faults and making timely adjustments accordingly. We have been aiming to keep the Chinese women’s volleyball team to remain dynamic and make more progress. As long as every effort is made towards this direction, we can gain peace of mind.I will always remember what Coach Yuan said, “The head coach of the Chinese women’s volleyball team must be both selfless and fearless.”In fact, the secret of the unique spirit of the Chinese women’s volleyball team lies in the fact that it never gives up in spite of whatever difficulties and hardships. Instead of winning the championship every time, what really matters for the team is that it is always ambitious for winning the championship. The Chinese team have been maintaining self-reliance and self-improvement when they are at a low ebb and staying true to their commitment in their prime.“The Challenges and Glory: The Journey of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team” records the growth of our national team.I appreciate this true record.Though we will get old, the spirit of the Chinese women’s volleyball team will endure.Lang PingDecember 20, 2019
Before young players like Hui Ruoqi and Zeng Chunlei, who were in their heyday, began their preparation for new matches, what they were most concerned about was who would be the head coach to lead them forward in the following four years.
At that time, Zhu Ting, who had not fully recovered from malnutrition, and Zhang Changning, who was not sure about her future development, were both preparing in their respective teams for the youth-group competition of the National Games of China. It was nearly half a year ago the 16-year-old Yuan Xinyue became the MVP of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship.
Gong Xiangyu was still an ordinary junior setter, and Li Yingying of the millennial generation just graduated from primary school. None of them rose to fame then.
Winter jasmine blossomed after a sandstorm hit Beijing in the spring.
It was of great urgency to decide the head coach of the Chinese women’s volleyball team.
