第一章至第五章主要介绍骨外固定发展史及现状，再生控制理论，应用力学、外固定器构型与功能特点，以及钢针布局，并发症分类防治等基本内容。第六章至第二十六章，分别按治疗病种介绍病因、病理、治疗要点，构型选择，操作步骤、术后管理和并发症防治等应用技术，以及讨论临床医生关心的问题，如骨外固定在肘关节畸形、腕关节畸形、指骨畸形，髋关节畸形、膝关节畸形、踝关节畸形、足踝畸形的骨外固定应用技术；在治疗外伤性骨不连、先天性性假关节、感染性骨不连（慢性骨髓炎）、感染性骨缺损、成骨不全等疑难骨病时的骨外固定治疗技术；骨外固定技术矫治肢体短缩畸形时进行肢体延长时的应用技术与风险管控；骨外固定在创伤骨科的应用，如四肢复杂骨折、毁损性肢体损伤，断肢再植与肢体延长，严重骨盆骨折等。

骨科主任医师，曾任首都医科大学生物工程系副主任，兼任中华创伤分会骨外固定技术培训中心主任；曾任中华骨科分会骨外固定学组副组长，以及《中国矫形外科杂志》编委，《中华创伤骨科杂志》编委。自20世纪80年代以来，在骨外固定原理研究、器械创新和临床应用方面创新求进取得了卓越的成绩，提出了具有实际指导意义的肢体再生控制学。

Ilizarov 技术理论研究和临床实践的巨大成功，使具有180 多年历史的外固定技术与人工关节置换术、关节镜技术、脊柱侧凸矫正术一起被誉为矫形外科四个“里程碑”之一。外固定技术相关技术原则已成为处理临床一些棘手问题的“金钥匙”。骨外固定既是一种固定方式独特的骨科技术，具有使用简便、适应证广、疗效确切和并发症少等优点，又是一种具有“再生效果”的医疗技术，在处理临床复杂疑难问题时，有不可替代的优势。
随着时间推移，人们发现传统的外固定概念存在着系统性力学模式上的“缺陷”，如最佳应力和“用进废退”的骨功能优化重建法则被遗忘在某个“角落”；致使骨生长障碍、畸形愈合、骨不连、再骨折等并发症时有发生。为探究这一问题，笔者根据交叉学科的逻辑思维模式，以控制论为“桥梁”，将张应力法则、力学生物学理论、骨功能适应性和微应变学说等理论进行有机结合、融会贯通，提出了系统性骨外固定治疗理念——再生控制学。为确保组织再生的生物学进程顺利奠定了理论基础。笔者首次提出的仿生外固定技术体系，为实现“疗效百分百”的梦想提供了新的选择。
再生控制学阐明了Ilizarov 技术与疗效之间的关联性、必然性和规律性，使读者达到“知其然，知其所以然”的目的；使熟练者达到“道明术精”的更高境界，以进一步提高骨外固定技术水平，避免或减少因力学模式不当而引发的并发症。因此，再生控制理念是骨外固定技术的“灵魂”，是制定治疗方案的理论基础和选择外固定器的指南，希望能被贯穿于应用技术的每一个环节。再生控制理念完善和发展了Ilizarov 技术，骨外固定由Ilizarov 时代进入到仿生外固定时代。
本书共分为二十八章，在以“再生控制”为思维主线治疗理念指导下，系统而详细地介绍了骨外固定在矫形外科、肢体延长、疑难骨病和创伤骨科的基本应用技术，对严重复杂性畸形、感染性骨不连、毁损性肢体损伤等疑难复杂患者的治疗，提出了系统性理念与策略；阐述了骨横向牵伸治疗糖尿病足的原理；提出了治疗感染性骨不连（骨缺损）的四项基本技术原则；强调了逐步牵伸矫形原则的临床意义。为增加本书的可读性和视觉效果，笔者应用CAD、3D 制图等计算机技术，绘制了系列、标准、直观和清晰的疾病分类、器械构型和操作步骤等图示。以“索相于图、索理于文、图文并茂、一目了然”的行文风格将本书呈现给读者。从夏和桃、秦泗河技术团队，云南省残疾人康复中心张云峰团队及其他各编委所在医院的35 000 多例临床病例资料中，选出具有示范作用的200 多份经典病例，进行分析、讨论，显著提高了阅读效果。
笔者克服了骨外固定原理“深奥”与技术复杂性的困难，以经典Ilizarov 技术为基石，前沿交叉学科知识为理论论据；以近40 年的临床经验和20 多项技术创新为背景；参考国内外相关权威著作的内容与编写风格，以“深入浅出”的表述方式，在十多名临床经验丰富的编委的合作下，在百忙中以分秒必争、精益求精态度完成了本书。本书内容科学、先进、实用，是骨科临床医生的工具书和参考书，也可作为骨再生研究和技术创新的参考资料。
由于笔者水平的局限性和内容的挑战性，特别是新理论、新概念、新技术，即使论证充分，也难免有错误之处，诚望同仁批评指正，提出宝贵意见，以便再版时更正。
